Drake State Announces Summer Educational Programs
Drake State Technical College is currently accepting participants for its Summer Education Opportunities. These programs are outside of the core curriculum offered by the college and are funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation. There are three different programs available: The Summer Bridge Program for High School Students, Adult Summer Bridge Program and the Summer Technology Institute (STI) for secondary school educators. All programs are provided at no charge to the participants with opportunities available to receive college credit and a stipend.
- The High School Summer Bridge Program is designed to combine traditional classroom learning, field trips and hands on opportunities taught by instructors from the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Students are exposed to classes in the areas of Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Computer Science. Students will learn to build a personal portfolio and explore physics simulations that are animated with game like environments. The month-long classes will begin on June 6, 2011 and end on June 30, 2011. Classes meet every Monday through Thursday, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. As part of this program, each student completing a minimum of half the program will receive a stipend of $8.50 per class hour completed. If a student attends all of the classes he or she will receive $544.00 for participating. This summer program is being offered due to a generous grant from the National Science Foundation. It will be limited to 80 qualified applicants who are incoming high school seniors or 2011 high school graduates. Additionally, students who successfully complete the program will receive either dual enrollment credit or three (3) College Credit Hours for CIS 146 Microcomputer Applications.
- The Adult Summer Bridge Program provides the same quality learning experience as the program for high school students but is designed to accommodate working adults. The program provides an exceptional opportunity for learners who have successfully attained a G.E.D., displaced workers in need of additional education or anyone who is interested in expanding their education in the areas of Mathematics, Physics, Biology or Computer Science. Because the program meets from 6 pm – 8 pm four days per week, the length of the program is eight weeks, June 6 through July 28. Just as with the high school student version of the program, participants completing a minimum of half the program will receive a stipend of $8.50 per class hour completed. If a student attends all of the classes he or she will receive $544.00 for participating. Students who successfully complete the program will receive three (3) College Credit Hours for CIS 146 Microcomputer Applications.
- The Summer Technology Institute is created specifically for area educators and guidance counselors to gain first hand experience about the advancements in technical education. The program combines hands on experience, workshops and industry field trips to assist educators in preparing students for post secondary educational opportunities and careers in fields requiring science, technology, engineering, or math. Participants who complete the entire program and successfully submit the required assignments will receive a $1,000 stipend. This two week institute is held from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday, July 11th to July 22nd. Both Summer Bridge Programs and the Summer Technology Institute are made possible through Drake’s National Science Foundation Strategic Plan for Enhancement, Expansion and Development of Undergraduate Programs (SPEED-UP) grant. The SPEED-UP grant totaled over $1M and is designed to promote sciences, engineering, computer science, and mathematics to underrepresented populations.
