Drake State Hits Record Enrollment
Drake State has experienced a record enrollment topping 1,540 for the fall 2010 semester. This increase equals a 33% increase over last fall’s enrollment.
“Our biggest challenge at this point is space,” says Dr. Helen McAlpine, President of Drake State. “Even with the addition of the downtown instructional site, we have an immediate need for additional classroom and lab facilities,” she adds.
The programs experiencing the largest increases were: Accounting, Heating and Air Conditioning Technology, Barbering Technology, Electrical Technology, Licensed Practical Nursing and Pre-Nursing. The new Medical Assisting Technology Program also exceeded enrollment projections by a 100%. Additionally, the general education department, which provides pre-requisites to most of the college’s program areas, has grown substantially.
The 33% increase represents an eight consecutive semester growth trend of double digit increases.
In preparation for the increase in student population, the college has applied for and was awarded a $220,000 Student Support Services Grant from the United State Department of Education. The grant will allow the college to expand the range of support services it offers in areas such as academic advising and counseling services.
