Scholarships at J. F. Drake State Community and Technical College

J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College offers a variety of scholarships through the college, industry and educational partners.  The college strives to ensure the information contained here is maintained, but often other opportunities are available through the financial aid office for short term or supplemental programs.  Please visit the Office of Financial Aid in 703 for additional information.

Institutional Scholarships & Eligibility Requirements

Institutional Scholarship - Academic

This scholarship covers the total cost of tuition and is renewed each semester as long as the student meets GPA and attendance requirements. 

Priority deadlines for application are as follows:
March 15 - New Students for Fall Semester
March 15 - New & Returning Students for Summer Term
July 15 - Returning Students for Fall Semester
October 15 - New & Returning Students for Spring Semester

The above deadlines are for priority consideration.  These dates may change based on availability of funds and number of applicants. 

 The following criteria must also be met for consideration to receive a Drake State Institutional Scholarship:

  • Must meet admission requirements
  • Must provide high school or official college transcript
  • Must have letter of reference from a school/college official (principal, counselor or instructor)
  • Must be enrolled for 12 hours each semester
  • Must have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Current students, high school graduates, and transfer students are eligible

Institutional Scholarship - Leadership

This scholarship covers one-half (50 percent) of the cost of tuition and fees and is renewed each semester as long as the student meets GPA and attendance requirements. Application deadline: March 15

  • Must meet admission requirements
  • Must provide high school or official college transcript
  • Must have letter of reference from a school/college official (principal, counselor or instructor)
  • Must be enrolled for 12 hours each semester
  • Must have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • High school graduates and transfer students are eligible

Senior Adult Scholarship

This is a state funded tuition waiver available each term to students in attendance who are Alabama residents, 60 years of age or older, and who meet the general admission standards of the institution, any specific admission standards established for a program of study, and any specific admission standards for a course, including pre-requisites.

The scholarship/waiver is restricted to credit courses on a space available basis and is limited to tuition only. Required institutional fees and other expenses, including lab fees, books and supplies, are the responsibility of the student.

Senior Adult Citizen Scholarship Program Waiver

Norma Powers Scholarship - Deadline: August 15, 2016

Norma L. Powers was a pioneer in the development of the current Salon Management and Barbering Technology programs at J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College while leaving a legacy of countless individuals trained and influenced.  This scholarship is a memorial of these contributions. 

 

  • Student must be enrolled at J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College
  • Maintain minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA or above on a 4.0 GPA scale
  • Junior or Senior student enrolled in the Salon Management, Barbering Technology or Esthetics program

                To be considered a Junior/Senior student you must have successfully completed the following:       

                  - Salon Management – 39 credit hours of the degree program
                  - Barbering Certificate – 26 hours of the certificate program
                  - Esthetics Certificate – 20 hours of the certificate program

  • Enrolled for minimum of 9 credit hours each
  • Scholarship may be applied to tuition and fees according to need not to exceed $1500
  • Student must re-apply each academic year
