J. F. Drake State Technical College automotive mechanics technology instructor, Scotty McLaughlin, recently coordinated a "first" for his department. The initial idea for the event sparked from student interest and soon the Automotive department's first Car & Truck Show became a reality.
The show had more than 20 participants in eight divisions. The level of participation represented a good showing in spite of another nearby car show and the NASCAR weekend in Talladega.
President Helen McAlpine congratulated McLaughlin, his students and the automotive mechanics technology craft committee for putting together a "well-oiled" show. "This show is a new and innovative idea and will generate positive exposure for our campus and the outstanding automotive mechanics program, " she added.
Numerous sponsors supported the first show including: Advanced Auto Parts, Meinke, Home Depot, Firestone, Skill Lube, Professional Sales, Car Market Auto Sales, Elk Valley Ford, Bishop Flooring, Troglen Iron, General Automotive Machine Shop, Matco Tools, and Matco Votec.
Judges for the event included Boyd Brown, Jim Rooks, and James Dunson.
McLaughlin and his students hope to coordinate an even bigger event next year.
