Barbering Technology
Program Description, Mission, and Objectives:
The Barbering Technology Certificate Program combines classroom theory with “hands-on” practice in the laboratory. Course requirements include general education courses, selected Cosmetology courses, and Barbering courses. The program is designed to provide qualified individuals the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, aptitude, and skills to obtain a Certificate verifying their competency in Barbering Technology.
The fundamental mission of the Barbering Technology Program is to provide excellence in career training. This mission dictates that the program shows a concern for a diverse population by respecting its client’s values, traditions, and aspirations. The Barbering program seeks to satisfy the employment and educational needs of the business and industry community.
Career Opportunities:
A graduate of the Barbering program can become employed as a Barber or Cosmetologist. After gaining experience in a shop/salon environment, barbers could build enough clientele to one day open his/her own business. Other opportunities include teaching in a vocational educational setting or advancing to a sales representative.

Skills Needed
In order to be successful in Barbering Technologies, a graduate should have finger dexterity, sense of form and artistry, enjoy dealing with the public, be able to follow a client’s instructions, have above average business skills and be an effective sales person who can attract new clients.
Expected Earnings/Salary
Earnings for Barbers as reported by the 2008-2009 Occupational Outlook Handbook are as follows:
- Median annual earnings for salaried barbers, including tips, is $24,044.
- The middle 50 percent earn between $18,574 and $30,555.
- The highest 10 percent earn more than $40,580 256.551.3150
